Why compost?

Composting has many benefits, including helping slow climate change. Here are a few important reasons:

  1. Reduces food waste
The average American family wastes 400 lbs of food waste per household. That’s about 35 percent of the total U.S. food supply ending up in the trash. Composting diverts waste from our quickly filling landfills. Composting turns what would be waste into a resource.

  2. Cuts methane emissions from landfills
Methane being 28 to 36 times more effective than CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere over a century.

  3. Draws carbon down from the atmosphere and stores it in the soil.

  4. Conserves water
Each 1% increase in soil organic matter helps soil hold 20,000 gallons more water per acre.

  5. Reduces soil erosion and improves soil health
Compost gives nutrients back to the soil to make it fertile for future growth.

I don’t generate enough compost for a weekly or bi-weekly pick-up, can I compost occasionally?
